The Desert of Maine in Freeport, ME. Lots of interesting history here. It is a 40-acre area of land that glacier silt has been exposed due to bad farming and overgrazing in the early 1900's. The family abandoned the land because they were unable to farm anything on it anymore and in 1925, Henry Goldrup bought it and converted it into a tourist attraction. Now, the trees and plants are slowly taken back the land. The desert also boasts of being the smallest in the world.
