Tennessee, Camping, & Other Adventures: Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Day 2 of our Tennessee-bound camping trip brought us to Weston, WV and to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Closed since 1994, it was very eery walking through the empty halls and imagining the people living in the tiny rooms. Its doors opened in 1864 and was designed to house 250 people. By the time it closed 130 years later, it housed nearly 2,400 in overcrowded and poor conditions. What an incredible look into the past, not only for psychiatric hospitals but for the Civil War era as well since it was temporally a hospital for soldiers. (Picture taken 5/16/10)
