Project 365 2.0: October 30, 2012 | Day 335

Well.  Last night was the scariest night ever.  After I tried to sleep through the storm, my mom woke me up at 10pm and told me we had to move our cars, the Raritan was starting to flood the apartment complex.  As soon as I walked outside, the water was ankle deep.  I headed my car to the back of the lot, away from the water, until I realized it was coming in through the lot’s back entrance as well.  All I could do was sit in the car while I watched the water rush at me.  I had to leave my car and hope for the best.  By this time, the water was almost knee deep and it was heading up the steps to my mom’s apartment.  My mom is on the bottom level, so the room I’m in sits right on top of a basement drain.  If you stood in the room, it sounded like you were right on top of a waterfall.  It was a scary feeling to feel so helpless and just watch it all happen.  The water did reach my mom’s door and leaked in a little, but we were lucky that was all.  The next morning was the saddest sight.  I never thought I’d have to live through something like that.  About 80% of the apartments were destroyed: flood damage, cars and dumpsters being dragged by the currents and smashing into buildings, or fallen trees.  Too many people here lost everything and it’s heart breaking to see it.  We were very lucky considering the apartments across the parking lot from us were flooded.  So as I sat in the car trying to get warm, I was watching everyone walking around surveying the damage.  I felt very drained, cold, tired, scared, and helpless when a group of birds caught my attention.  They looked so care free and very happy to be bathing in all the huge puddles Sandy left behind.  I couldn’t help but feel a little cheered up: Mother Nature may have come through and wreaked havoc last night but at least this morning someone could benefit from it.
