Camping in the Rain: Before and After

I have never gone camping with my family when I was a kid.  The very first time I went was a weekend trip to Shenandoah National Park in VA in my twenties.  I had no idea what to expect but I did not expect it to rain during our very first night there.  Not only did it rain, it was in October so it was really cold, our tent collapsed, and everything inside got extremely wet, including us.  We had to go into town the next morning to get a new tent and dry all our clothes and blankets at the laundry mat.

Despite the experience, I loved it and have nothing but fond memories of the trip.  I will admit, though, I had more fun and liked it even more when we got the new tent up and situated.  Everything was just so peaceful and so pretty with all the Autumn colors.  This trip made me fall in love with National Parks and inspired my mission to visit every single one in the U.S.  (And I’m getting there!  This May I get to add another one to my list!)

Here are the “before” and “after” pictures of our tents.  It’s just really funny how bad and wet our original tent ended up and it is amazing we slept through a rainy night in it.

The "Before": our collapsed, wet tent. (Picture taken 10/17/06)

The "After": our brand new, sturdy tent. (Picture taken 10/17/06)
